Mirte's first impressions
My name is Mirte Hartland and I’m studying CMV (cultural social work) in Amsterdam. Through my studies I came into contact with the Cre8 East Africa project. For this project I will fulfil two main roles. I will be a researcher and I will make a film registration of the Dunga pilot project. My research wil focus on the used method. This pilot will be searched for short and long term effects. Is this creative method a good way to reach the formulated goals? I’m curious about the way this project and my research will develop.
Saturday August 5th I arrived in Nairobi with Raoul. It’s my first time in Kenya and Africa so everything is new to me. Nairobi was shocking…the people, the traffic with all their air pollution…I was happy I could relax in the Parkside Hotel every now and then. After a while I got a bit used to the city and I had a few nice days in Nairobi. I didn’t get used to the cars that DO NOT stop.
Wednesday August 9th we (Ben, Raoul, Sami and me) drove through Nakuru to Kisumu with Sami’s car. The road was terribly bad, but this was my first chance to get a good introduction of Kenya. I was surprised by the beauty of the countryside. During the trip we spotted lots of wild animals like zebra’s, baboons and flamingo’s. After this exhausting drive we arrived in Dunga. We stay at Joan’s place in a beautiful house. We are being stuffed with local Luo food and are getting very fat.
Of course we have a lot of work to do because we are not here to relax. I saw the Dunga orphans school for the first time at Thursday August 10th and I was impressed. There seems to be a lot of work done on the building. They build a kitchen during this last year. We met a few key figures of the village. Friday we met the team of artists and teachers we are going to do the project with. During this meeting my research started. I handed out a questioner that should result in an analysis of the expectations and knowledge of the team. I also filmed and took some pictures of the beautiful children of the school. The real project starts on Monday!
